Notes:
Staff will be counted once for each centre that they work in. Paid childcare staff who are also responsible for the management of the registered service will be counted both in this table and in Table 11.
The position of the question on unpaid volunteers changed in 2008. This may account for some of the large change in the number of centres using paid volunteers between 2007 and 2008.
In all years, some centres did not provide information on the number of paid childcare staff. For 2007 and 2008, where centres provided information in the previous year the number of staff was carried forward. For 2007, where centres did not provide information in the previous year the average number for all other centres was applied. For 2008, the median has been used to avoid any bias caused by outliers in the data and to make the measures used in the publication consistent throughout. For this reason, there is a discontinuity in the figures between 2007 and 2008 and care should be taken in interpreting the time series.
Staffing figures for 2008 are rounded to the nearest 10 to express the uncertainty inherent in these estimates. For this reason, totals may not exactly equal the sum of their parts.
The data for 2005 is from a sample of childcare centres. Information on whether staff work full-time or part-time and the number of unpaid volunteers was not collected in September 2005.
"Temporary" category for 2005 includes some staff classified as "Other" rather than "Permanent" or "Temporary"
