Staff will be counted once for each centre that they work in. Paid childcare staff who are also responsible for the management of the registered service will be counted both in this table and in Table 11.
686 centres did not provide information on the number of childcare staff. Where centres provided information in 2007 the number of staff has been carried forward to 2008 (363 centres). Where centres did not provide information in 2007, the median number for all other centres has been applied, broken down by main service type (323 centres). This is a change from previous publications, where the average number for all other centres was applied. The median has been used to avoid any bias caused by outliers in the data and to make the measures used in the publication consistent throughout. For this reason, figures for 2008 are not comparable with those from previous years.
All figures are rounded to the nearest 10 to express the uncertainty inherent in these estimates. For this reason, totals may not exactly equal the sum of their parts.
