Notes:
Children are counted once for each centre and/or childminder they attend.
Childminder figures are based on a sample of registered childminders. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, the data were weighted up to the total number of registered childminders in Scotland and the number of inactive childminders was estimated from the survey responses. For 2008, those responding to say they were still childminding have been weighted up to the total number of registered childminders in Scotland excluding those listed by the Care Commission as inactive (5,580). For this reason, figures for 2007 and 2008 are not comparable. More detail on the methodology used is available in the background notes.
In all years, some centres did not provide information on the number of children attending. Where centres provided information in the previous year the number of children was carried forward. Where centres did not provide information in the previous year, for 2006 and 2007 the average number for all other centres was applied. For 2008, the median has been used to avoid any bias caused by outliers in the data and to make the measures used in the publication consistent throughout. For this reason, there is a discontinuity in the figures between 2007 and 2008 and care should be taken in interpreting the time series.

The number of children of "unknown" age increased in 2007 because in 2007 and 2008 some centres provided only the total number of children attending.
Children attending sitter services were not included prior to 2007.
All figures are rounded to the nearest 10 to express the uncertainty inherent in these estimates. For this reason, totals may not exactly equal the sum of their parts.
