Children are counted once for each centre and/or childminder they attend.
Childminder figures are based on a sample of registered childminders. The data have been weighted up to the total number of registered childminders in Scotland listed by the Commission, excluding those that are inactive (5,580). This is a change from 2007, when the number of inactive childminders was estimated from the sample. More detail on the methodology used is available in the background notes.
370 centres did not provide information on the number of children attending. Where centres provided information in 2007 the number of children has been carried forward to 2008 (169 centres). Where centres did not provide information in 2007, the median number for all other centres has been applied, broken down by main service type (201 centres). This is a change from previous publications, where the average number for all other centres was applied. The median has been used to avoid any bias caused by outliers in the data and to make the measures used in the publication consistent throughout. For this reason, figures for 2008 are not comparable with those from previous years.
All figures are rounded to the nearest 10 to express the uncertainty inherent in these estimates. For this reason, totals may not exactly equal the sum of their parts.
