ANNEX 5 PUPIL FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSION OUTLINE

S1/S2 Road Safety Resource discussions

Introduction

Hello. Thank you for coming to talk to us. My name is ……… and this is ………...we work for …………and we are interested to hear what you have to say about safer travel. We have some questions to ask about what you think and you will be pleased to hear that there are no right and wrong answers. It should only take about 30-40 minutes. If it's okay with you we would like to tape the discussion so that we don't have to take too many notes. The tape is only to remind us what you think and nobody will be identified, so you can say what you want. Well we have said who we are, please could tell us your names.

Personal travel

How do you travel to school? Is that different to when you were in primary school?

What about journeys when you are not at school - how have they changed - longer? / type? / with friends?

Have you ever asked your parents to travel anywhere on your own or with friends and not been allowed to? Where? Why do you think your parents said no?

What methods of travelling do you think you will be using in 5 and 10 years time?

What makes a good driver?

Problems and concerns

How would you describe the traffic around the school and where you live?

Are there any places where it's difficult for pedestrians / cyclists / drivers - why?

Road safety education

What do you think of when someone mentions road safety?

Thinking back - who do you think has taught you most about keeping safe when using the roads?

Can you remember any teaching you about road safety in school? (primary or secondary)

What do you think of the ideas and activities in this resource (copy of s1/s2) - comments on specific worksheets (pairs then all the group)

New resource ideas

Initial open question - if you were developing a new resource for your age group what do you think should be included?

Rating cards - based on the RS topics and the learning and teaching approaches used in the teacher questionnaire. Working in pairs and then as a whole group the pupils are asked to put the cards into categories of yes / perhaps / no

What do you think are the best/worst ideas - why?

Extract from timeout DVD if time/appropriate

Any other comments
