Pupils have to develop a hazards and benefits profile of different modes of travelling by going through 6 stages from planning to final draft.

Pupils creating an information fact sheet using information provided.

Finding out about SRSC

Using the Internet to access the website pupils investigate the work of the SSRSC.

Activity

Outline Description Of Activity

1) Accidents

30 minutes

A worksheet based activity introduced by discussion. Pupils are required to write down what accidents might happen in 6 different types of location and suggest ways in which these might be prevented. The extension tasks involve answering questions about accidents.

2) Travel Risks

20 minutes

A worksheet based activity introduced by discussion. Pupils are required to rate 8 methods of travelling according to their which is the most dangerous in terms of fatalities. The extension activity asks pupils to lists reasons why some modes of travel are more dangerous than others.

3) Good and bad RS behaviour

40 minutes

A worksheet based activity introduced by brainstorm and discussion. Pupils are required to read 8 statements and tick whether they describe good or bad behaviour. A support word bank is also available.

4) Child deaths on the road

2 hours

Pupils are required to develop a newspaper report based upon a child death in a road accident. An information sheet is provided to assist pupils. As an extension pupils are asked to research newspaper reports.

6) Laws

1 hour

Pupils are required to comment on the effectiveness of two posters following a brainstorming and discussion activity. The key activity is about the effectiveness of posters rather than the actual laws about speed and seat belt wearing. The aim is stated as learning about laws. The extension work is concerned with researching advertising campaigns.

7) Moving from primary to secondary school

1 hour

A worksheet based activity following an introductory discussion. Pupils are required to complete a survey sheet on changes.

10) Peer pressure

1 hour

Brainstorming and discussion introduce the paired role play activity.
