There were differences in the employment rate estimates for working aged men and women in 2007. The rate for males was higher at 79.1%, compared to an estimate of 72.7% for females. The total number of working age males in employment, in 2007, was estimated at just over 1.299 million with a further 28,300 over working age in employment. The total number of working age females in employment was estimated at nearly 1.133 million with a further 60,600 over working age in employment.

Table 3 shows that the three local authority areas which had the highest male employment rate estimates in 2007 were: Shetland Islands (91.5%), Orkney Islands (87.7%) and Aberdeenshire (87.2%).

A much lower proportion of males living in the 15% most deprived areas in Scotland were employed (62.6%) compared to 81.7% for the rest of Scotland.

In terms of urban/rural areas, the 2007 male employment rate estimate was lowest in large urban areas (76.1%) and highest in accessible rural areas (84.9%).

The employment rate for males living in the Highlands & Islands Enterprise area was 84.7%. This compares with 78.6% for males living in the rest of Scotland.

Table 4 shows that the three local authority areas which had the highest female employment rate estimates in 2007 were: Orkney Islands (84.9%), Shetland Islands (84.0%) and Argyll & Bute (79.2%).

Six local authority areas had female employment rate estimates below 70.0% in 2007: Glasgow City (62.4%), North Ayrshire (66.3%), North Lanarkshire (67.9%), Clackmannanshire (68.2%), Inverclyde (68.7%) and West Dunbartonshire (68.8%).

In 2007, the female employment rate estimate for the 15% most deprived areas was 54.7%; much lower than that for the rest of Scotland (75.8%).

In terms of urban/rural areas, the 2007 female employment rate estimate was lowest in large urban areas (70.0%) and highest in accessible rural areas (77.5%).

Female employment rates for the Highlands & Islands Enterprise area was 78.8%, higher than the employment rates for females in the rest of Scotland (72.2%).
