The working age economic inactivity rate estimate was lower for males (16.6%) than females (23.9%) in Scotland in 2007.
Table 18 shows economic inactivity rate estimates for working age males for 2007. Four areas had male inactivity rate estimates above 20.0%: Inverclyde (24.5%), Glasgow City (22.8%), Dundee City (21.6%) and Clackmannanshire (21.6%).

In 2007, the male inactivity rate estimate in the 15% most deprived areas was 28.4%, significantly higher than that for the rest of Scotland at 14.7%.
In terms of urban/rural areas, in 2007, male inactivity was highest in large urban areas (with an estimated rate of 19.3%).
Male inactivity rates for the Highlands & Islands Enterprise area was 12.0% in 2007, lower than that for the rest of Scotland (17.0%).
Table 19 shows economic inactivity rate estimates for working age females for 2007. The three local authority areas with the highest female inactivity rate estimates in 2007 were: Glasgow City (34.0%), Clackmannanshire (29.1%) and North Ayrshire (29.0%). The working age female economic inactivity rate estimate was higher than the corresponding male rate in every local authority area.
