People aged 50 and over
The employment rate estimate for those aged 50 to the state pension age (59 for females and 64 for males) was 71.4% in Scotland in 2007.
Two local authority areas had an older person's employment rate estimate above 80.0% in 2007: Shetland Islands (82.5%) and Orkney Islands (81.4%).
The 2007 employment rate estimate for those aged 50 to the state pension age, living in the 15% most deprived areas, was 50.8%; much lower than that for the rest of Scotland (74.3%).
In terms of urban/rural areas, the 2007 employment rate estimate for those aged 50 to the state pension age was lowest in large urban areas (67.8%) and highest in accessible rural areas (77.6%).
The 2007 employment rate for those aged 50 to the state pension age was 78.8% for those living in the Highlands & Islands Enterprise area, and 70.6% for those living in the rest of Scotland.
