  • The chart above shows the annual RPI inflation rate at each month over the last 12 months.
  • From September 2007 onwards annual food RPI inflation rate was higher than all items RPI. In April 2008, food RPI inflation rate was at 6.9%, whilst all items RPI inflation rate was 4.2%.

  • The chart shows month-on-month percentage changes in RPI on food and all items.
  • Between the months of August 2007 and January 2008, food RPI grew more rapidly than all items RPI. In April 2008 food RPI was again higher than all items RPI.

  • The average distance to a medium/large food store is 2,328 metres.
  • City local authorities have shorter distances (Glasgow average is 605 metres).
  • Rural local authorities have longer distances (Shetland average is 17,424 metres).

  • Of £24.78 weekly household expenditure on food and drink, the largest % (22%) was on meat. This was followed by 14% spent on alcoholic drinks and 12% on bread and cereals.
  • Fruit and vegetables together made up 13% and Sugar and sweet products added up to 9% of the total.

  • The chart shows the % of inputs that Scottish processors source from Scotland by band (0%, 1-25%, 26-49%, etc.).
  • The majority of Scottish food and drink processors source at least some produce from Scotland.
  • 28% of Scottish processors sourced entirely from within Scotland.
