  • Tesco had the biggest share of the retailer market in both Great Britain and Scotland in 2006 and 2007.
  • In 2006 and 2007 Sainsbury's market share was 10% and 9% larger respectively in the rest of Great Britain than it was in Scotland.
  • Asda has a larger share in Scotland than it does in the rest of Great Britain.

  • The value of public sector food procurement is £84.8 million.
  • The largest share of public food procurement is for schools with £45.8 million spent amounting to 54% of the total.
  • The health sector accounts for £24.6 million which is 29% of the total.

  • Frozen food accounts for a large share of food procured by the public sector - £16.6 million - constituting 20% of the total.
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables account for 4% of all food procured which amounts to £3.5 million in total.

  • Sales of Scottish primary produce amounted to £3.3 billion in 2004 of which 24% were purchased by Scottish processors and 23% were purchased by Scottish households.
  • 30% was purchased by non-Scottish purchasers and 16% by Scottish primary producers.
