Trend in gross value added in the food and drink industry in Scotland, 1998-2005

- Gross value added in manufacturing has been on the increase in recent years and increased by 46% to £2873 million since 2000. GVA in retailing and non-residential catering also increased during the 1998-2005 period.
- The wholesale sector saw fluctuations in its GVA and in 2005 it was 21% lower than in 1998.
- Food and drink manufacturing accounted for 40% of GVA in 2005.

- Beverages is the largest in the manufacturing sector in terms of gross value added, with £1,581.7 million in 2005. Compared to 1998, this industry saw a 63% increase in GVA.
- Fish and meat processing sectors also contribute a considerable amount to the GVA in the manufacturing sectors. Whilst there was little change in the GVA in meat processing between 1998 and 2005, fish processing saw a 37% increase during the same period.

- In terms of sales, retailing is the largest with £8,829 million (34%), followed by the manufacturing with sales of £7,588 million (29%).
- Non-residential catering is the smallest contributing £3,271 million (13%) to the total sales in the food and drink industry.

- Sales in all parts of the food and drink industry have increased since 1998, with the largest increase in the non-residential catering sector.
- Sales in manufacturing were lower than their 1998 level until 2003, when they picked up again to reach an overall increase of 11% over the 1998-2005 period.
