CHAPTER FOUR METHOD OF ANALYSIS. METHOD OF ANALYSIS;

4.1 The analysis of the consultation responses was undertaken by the Social Research team within The Scottish Government's Environment, Rural Affairs and Marine Analytical Division. The responses to the closed questions were coded in order to present the overall distribution of responses across all sections. To provide further analytical insight, responses to the questionnaire were re-classified to five main categories by the Deer Commission's policy team. These categories are: (A) Individuals; (B) Estate and Deer Management Group; ( EDMGs); (C) Public Agencies; (D) National Non-Governmental Organisations ( NGOs); and (E) Local Communities of Interest. This classification enabled the analysis to provide a breakdown of key closed questions responses, so that the key messages coming from different stakeholders could be understood better.

4.2 Qualitative data in the form of open question responses, free text letters, and summaries of four public consultation meeting was analysed by identifying key themes for each question, and by identifying further themes for the free text and public consultation summaries . In all, the quantitative and qualitative elements of the consultation analysis complement each other to give a complete picture of the views expressed during the consultation process.

4.3 For the most part, the themes identified in open text responses have been summarised in a series of tables that also display examples of quotes that capture these themes. In several cases it was more appropriate that the responses were summarised as a narrative. The results of responses to the closed questions (the quantitative data) are summarised in tables in each section, following the summary of open text.
