CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 In 2007 Scottish Ministers asked the Deer Commission for Scotland ( DCS) to lead on the development of a new Joint Agency strategy for wild deer to reflect and capture the significant changes in the issues, challenges, context, practices and greatly increased integrated government working facing deer management today. The strategy will build on the previous vision and strategy through a joint-agency approach and aims to encourage a more sustainable and integrated approach to deer management in the context of land management. The main agencies involved in this joint-working approach alongside DCS are Scottish Natural Heritage ( SNH) and the Forestry Commission for Scotland ( FCS).
1.2 The Joint Agency Strategy for Wild Deer states that in 20 years time there will be widespread understanding and achievement of sustainable deer management. All species of deer will contribute to: (1) a high quality environment; (2) sustainable economic development; and (3) social wellbeing. This vision will be achieved through a range of objectives, including, safeguarding the welfare of all species of wild deer, increasing the economic opportunities associated with wild deer, managing the impact of wild deer in and around communities, and so on. The draft consultation Strategy has also identified a wide array of action and implementation tools to realise its objectives and monitor their outcomes.
