2. Main Points

  • There were 26,056 firearm certificates on issue at the end of 2007, a decrease of 1 per cent on the previous year, and 16 per cent lower than the number in 1998.
  • The 26,056 firearm certificates on issue at the end of 2007 covered the possession of 66,893 firearms, a 1 per cent increase compared to 2006. The number of firearms held on certificate has been rising in recent years and the number held in 2007 was the highest in the 10 years covered by this bulletin.
  • In 2007, there were 1,203 applications for new firearms certificates, of which 1,194 (99 per cent) were granted. There were 6,641 applications for renewal, of which 6,634 were granted.
  • There were 1,327 cancellations of firearm certificates and 55 firearm certificates were revoked.
  • The majority (82 per cent) of certified firearms where the type of weapon was known were rifles.
  • There were 49,213 shot gun certificates on issue at the end of 2007, a decrease of 2 per cent from 2006, and 22 per cent lower than at the end of 1998.
  • The 49,213 shot gun certificates on issue at the end of 2007 covered the possession of 133,940 shot guns, an increase of 1 per cent compared to 2006 and the highest number in the 10 years covered by this bulletin. In 2007, the average number of shot guns possessed for each certificate was 2.7.
  • The number of applications for a new shot gun certificate was 1,891 in 2007, 2 per cent higher than in 2006. Ninety eight per cent (1,860) of these applications were granted. There were 13,142 applications for renewal of shot gun certificates, 13,133 of which were granted.
  • In 2007, there were 2,608 cancellations of shot gun certificates and 83 revocations of shot gun certificates.
  • The numbers of both firearm and shot gun certificates on issue, per head of population, were highest in the Northern police force area and lowest in Strathclyde.
  • There were 301 registered firearms dealers in Scotland at the end of 2007, an increase of 6 per cent from the 283 registered dealers at the end of 2006.
