7. What problems do they encounter?

Around 12 per cent of all respondents felt that they had experienced some level of congestion when travelling by car, compared to only 9 per cent of bus and rail users.

Congestion

7.1 Around 12 per cent of all respondents in 2005/2006 felt that they had experienced some level of congestion when travelling by car, compared to only 9 per cent of bus and rail users [ Table 24, Table 25]. Respondents commuting by car felt that almost a fifth of all journeys were delayed by congestion (19 per cent).

7.2 Drivers felt that journeys were more delayed during the week than at the weekend and that the worst times for congestion were during the weekday morning and evening rush hour periods. [Figure 16]

7.3 Congestion was given as the most common reason for delays to bus journeys [ Table 26], with 38 per cent giving this reason for their delay. Bus punctuality and road works were also highly cited as reasons for delays to bus journeys.

Parking

7.4 Three per cent of all car or van journeys paid for parking at the end of their journey [ Table 27], of which over two-thirds were in commercial car parks (68 per cent). Around 70 per cent of parking charges were £2 or under and 40 per cent were under 2 hours.
