6. When are people travelling?

The percentage of journeys during the week peaked during the morning and evening rush hours. However, journeys at the weekend demonstrated a peak around noon.

6.1 As stated in section 2.8 any analysis by day of the week must be taken with caution.

6.2 There has been little change in the distribution across the days of the week since 1999. Sunday consistently records the smallest percentage of journeys. [ Table 9]

6.3 Just over a fifth of all taxi journeys were recorded on a Saturday, compared to only 8 per cent on Mondays. The majority of commuting, business and education journeys were recorded during the week, with only a small percentage recorded at the weekend (8-12 per cent. [ Table 11]

6.4 Older people (those aged 60 or over) reported the majority of their journeys during the day (9:30am to 4:30pm) compared to only 42 per cent of 16-19 year olds. [ Table 21, Figure 13]

6.5 The day of the week had an impact on the time that journeys were made i.e. journeys during the week peaked during the morning and evening rush hours. However, the percentage of journeys at the weekend also demonstrated a peak, at around noon. [Figure 14]

6.6 There was very little variation in the percentage of journeys before 7am and after 2pm by weekday [ Table 21]. The difference between weekday and weekend journeys is apparent between 7 and 9:30am, where around a fifth of all journeys were reported Monday-Friday compared to only around a tenth at the weekend. This trend reversed between noon and 2:30pm, where weekend journeys accounted for around 23 per cent of all journeys compared to around 15 percent during the week.

6.7 Long journeys showed a correlation with their start time, the majority of journeys over 3 hours started before 2pm (85 per cent). Less than ten per cent of journeys were over an hour in duration. [Figure 15]
