2. Introduction to the Scottish Household Survey and the Travel Diary
2.1 The information presented in this bulletin was obtained from interviews with one randomly-chosen adult per household in the sample. The respondent was asked about their travel on the previous day. Each adult in the household had an equal chance of selection.
2.2 Statistics are provided for Scotland as a whole, for local authority and Regional Transport Partnership Areas ( RTPs) as well as a range of socio-demographic indicators.
2.3 The information collected was analysed in conjunction with information collected about the household as a whole, e.g. annual net household income, Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation ( SIMD).
2.4 The data was extracted from the SHS database in early 2008 and does not take into account any subsequent revisions to the data.
2.5 Time series statistics may differ slightly from those published in earlier bulletins because further data cleaning has been carried out. The results have been weighted to take into account differences in selection probabilities. Un-weighted sample numbers are given in italics.
2.6 Table 1 to Table 32 give a detailed breakdown of the Travel Diary results, only journeys over ΒΌ mile and longer than 5 minutes on foot are reported. All distances quoted are straight-line distances and do not take into account the respondents route.
2.7 Results are subject to sampling variability and care should be taken when interpreting year on year changes. Table 33 shows confidence limits for the estimates. A detailed background of the SHS methodology is given in Appendix A.
2.8 Although the total number of interviews was evenly spread across the week, this is not the case at the local authority level [ Table 32]. Therefore, any analysis by day of week should be taken with caution.
2.9 Table 34 lists tables that were present in previous editions but do not appear in this issue.
