Scotland's seas: towards understanding their state

Scotland's seas: towards understanding their state.

Notes

Chapter 1

[A] ICES working definition of Ecosystem Approach: integrated management of human activities based on our knowledge of ecosystem dynamics to achieve sustainable use of ecosystem goods and services, and maintenance of ecosystem integrity. Bergen Declaration, 2002. 5th International Conference on the Protection of the North Sea.

Chapter 2

[A] The term 'bank' is used to described a region that is shallower (in terms of water depth) than its surroundings.

Chapter 3

[A] OSPAR Convention, Definition of [Marine] Pollution - The introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances or energy into the maritime area which results, or is likely to result, in hazards to human health, harm to living resources and marine ecosystems, damage to amenities or interference with other legitimate uses of the sea.

Chapter 4

[A] Compiled results for the first six year cycle of monitoring in the UK are available on the JNCC website at: http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-3520. Specific results for each feature in Scotland are accessible via the SNH website, via the SiteLink tool: http://www.snh.org.uk/snhi/

[B] The Scottish Biodiversity list is available from: http://www.biodiversityscotland.gov.uk/pageType2.php?id=35&type=2&navID=92 and satisfies the requirements of Section 2(4) of the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004.

[C] Results are reported to JNCC and Scottish Government and are available upon the SNH website, via SiteLink: http://www.snh.org.uk/snhi/

[D] The preliminary analysis of CPR A Route data was funded by the UHI Millennium Institute. Thanks are due to the Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science for making these data available, and to the owners and crews of the ships that collected it.

[E] SNH's SCM and broadscale mapping reports are available at http://www.snh.org.uk/pubs/cr.asp

[F] The Scottish Biodiversity Strategy satisfies the requirements of Section 2(1) of the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004.

[G] ICES - details of the organisation, its working groups and advice can be found at http://www.ices.dk/

Chapter 5

[A] Partial Input-Output category core employment figures are based upon estimated output share applied to employment figures for the whole Input-Output category. Indirect and supported upstream figures are estimated using the Input-Output model. Each of the identified marine industries indirect and supported upstream effects will include activity between other marine industries. To prevent double counting, this activity is not included for the marine sector as a whole. As a result, the all marine sector totals will always be lower than the sum of the identified industries, except for the core industry columns.

[B] Crofters who own a boat and engage in occasional fishing activity to supplement their crofting are included in the statistics.

[C] When the Register of Buyers and Sellers ( RBS) was introduced in September 2005, Sales Notes were not initially required for sales of shellfish and information on the value of such landings is consequently missing. The value has therefore been estimated for a number of landings, mostly shellfish, relating to voyages starting on or after 1 September 2005.

[D] Figures are courtesy of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland ( RCAHMS): see http://www.rcahms.gov.uk. RCAHMS report that the total number of records is expected to rise to 20-25,000 on completion of data entry.

[E] In addition, the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986 provides for the protection by the Ministry of Defence of all aircraft and designated wrecks lost in military service after 4 August 1914.

[F] Along the 30% of Scotland's coast recorded by the HS coastal zone assessments, 3525 monuments were recommended for further action. Of these, urgent action is likely to be necessary at c.200.

Chapter 7

[A] The Marine Data and Information Partnership ( MDIP) will merge in 2008 with the Marine Environmental Data Action Group ( MEDAG) to form the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network ( MEDIN).
