5.3.2.1.6 Support for non productive investments
HABITAT GRAZING MANAGEMENT (Rural Priorities)

Article 36(a)(vi)

Measure code (216)

Objectives

The option aims to encourage land managers to take a more active shepherding role to spread livestock grazing more evenly across holdings to bring upland and moorland habitats into favourable condition.

Scope and actions

This option will have restricted availability.

It will be available within moorland and upland SSSIs and Natura sites, where a moorland management plan for these sites has identified a need for extra shepherding to address localised overgrazing or undergrazing issues, where other approaches would be ineffective or impractical. The alternative approaches that the Moorland Management Plan should consider include a more appropriate muirburn programme, increased bracken control and/or fencing - where these would not harm the conservation interest of the site.

It is not available to address an undergrazing or overgrazing problem caused by feeding locations, or inappropriate stock numbers. It goes beyond the requirements of Cross Compliance.

Description and justification of the different types of commitments, based on their expected environmental impact in relation to environmental needs and priorities

The following actions will be undertaken:

  • Land managers will apply additional shepherding effort to achieve outcomes specified in their moorland management plan. These may detail expected changes in habitat condition - including indicators such as sward heights, proportion of shrubby vegetation or the degree to which it is grazed.
  • Land managers will submit an annual record of management to record the work undertaken for this measure (number of hours, when undertaken, a record of any problems encountered and any visible signs of change in the target habitat). Any changes in sheep grazing behaviour ( e.g. whether they have willingly spent more/less time on different parts of the unit).

This option is required to meet the Scottish Ministers target for bringing special features into favourable condition.

Amounts of support

€11.42/Hr - (skilled worker labour rate)
