2 Totals
2.1 The total number of teachers based in primary, secondary and special schools, or visiting specialists, was 52,970, which is 151 more than in 2006. Falling pupil rolls meant that the pupil teacher ratio improved from 13.3 in 2006 to 13.1 in 2007.
2.2 There were also 1,514 teachers in the pre-school sector. This is 172 fewer than the estimated January 2007 figure of 1,686. However, problems with the data quality of the pre-school collections in previous years may account for some of this difference.
2.3 Hence overall there were 54,484 1 teachers in 2007, 178 lower than in 2006.
2.4 There were a further 23,002 school based staff and 2,469 centrally employed staff identified in the staff census as providing support to the education system.
