Table 4.1: Total gross revenue expenditure on special education (£000), 02-03 to 06-07 (1)
Per pupil figures calculated using population aged 5-15 inclusive in each local authority area. Differences between local authorities will be partly dependent on whether there are special schools located within their area. Local authorities with pupils in neighbouring authorities' schools are only responsible for the payment of the additional support costs. Local authorities with special schools would record spend on pupils from neighbouring authorities, but would receive funding from those authorities. Any differences in prevalence rates will also cause differences in levels of spend.

(1) Includes expenditure on all aspects of special needs provision, including within the mainstream sector. Pupils in mainstream education may only have the additional element of expenditure included here, whereas pupils in special education would have the full amount included.
(2) Per resident aged 5-15 inclusive.
(3) A larger proportion of funding was reported under mainstream sectors, relative to previous years.
