2. INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES OF THIS REPORT

The review engaged with a range of actors drawn from government, research and civic society. This included strategic decision-makers and those engaged in research as well as end-users/stakeholders in the research programmes.

The objectives of the approach were to identify, for the audience selected:

  • key policy-relevant drivers, trends and challenges over the next 30 years
  • a summary of knowledge gaps and potential research needs relevant to the above drivers and challenges
  • perceptions of Scotland's expertise, opportunities and emerging gaps in relation to science skills
  • their response to some indicative future research themes developed through preliminary discussions within the Scottish Government and RERAD's Strategic Science Advisory Panel ( SSAP) which advises the Scottish Government on the strategic development of the research programme including horizon scanning
