11. Diversion from Prosecution (Chart 29 and Tables 11.1 to 11.3)

11.1 A total of 1,133 Diversion from Prosecution ( DP) cases commenced in 2006-07, a decrease of 5 per cent from the 2005-06 total of 1,198. These 1,133 cases relate to 1,089 individuals. Other DP totals for 2006-07 included 1,626 referrals (a 2 per cent increase on 2005-06), 1,336 assessments (10 per cent decrease), 809 cases successfully completed (5 per cent increase) and 63 (17 per cent increase) cases referred to drug treatment/education.

11.2 Fifty-three per cent of DP cases commenced in 2006-07 involved males. Females receiving Diversion from Prosecution tended to be older than males, with 60 per cent aged over 30 compared with 41 per cent for males. Conversely, 45 per cent of cases for males and 19 per cent for females involved persons aged under 21 years.

11.3 Forty-eight per cent of DP cases commenced in 2006-07 related to offenders who were unemployed or not seeking employment. Males receiving Diversion from Prosecution were more likely to be employed than females, 25 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.
