ALN
Adult literacy and numeracy

ALNIS
The Adult Literacy and Numeracy in Scotland Report, 2001

ALNPs
Adult Literacy and Numeracy Partnership(s). Thirty-two partnerships linked to local authority areas' Community Learning Partnerships have been established to prepare, deliver, and monitor local strategic plans aimed at developing literacy and numeracy provision. Some areas use a range of terminology including Adult Literacies Partnership or Literacies Action Plan Partnership.

ESOL
English for speakers of other languages

ETLLD
The Scottish Executive's Education, Transport and Lifelong Learning Department

Exit Strategies
The plan devised, when an application for funding is made, for what will happen after the grant is completed

Formative evaluation
A method of judging the worth of a programme while the programme activities are forming or happening

ICT
Information Communications Technology

LEAP
Learning, Evaluation and Planning - a learning-based planning and evaluation framework that supports those working to improve the quality of community life

Literacies
A term acknowledging that different literacy and numeracy skills, knowledge and understanding are needed for different contexts

Learning Connections
A Team within Communities Scotland responsible for Adult Literacies, Community Learning and Development, and Community Engagement issues

SIPs
Social Inclusion Partnerships - 48 area based and thematic initiatives (now closed) to promote the Scottish Executive's social justice agenda
