FOOTNOTES
1. The Research Team was led by Professor Paul Jenkins and comprised James Morgan and Dr. Harry Smith of the School of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University, with Fiona McLachlan of Architecture at Edinburgh University and Dr. Soledad Garcia Ferrari of the School of Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art.
2 . Homes for Scotland represent 90% of house-builders in Scotland: http://www.homesforscotland.co.uk/
3. The Advisory Group comprised representatives of Social Research and the Architecture Policy Unit of the Scottish Executive, one representative of Architecture & Design Scotland, and 5 representatives of Homes for Scotland.
4. The following organisations were invited to take part in the Reference Group: Built Environment Forum Scotland; Centre for the Built Environment; Communities Scotland; Highland Housing Alliance; National House Building Council; Ownership Options; Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland ( RIAS); Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors ( RICS); Royal Town Planning Institute ( RTPI Scotland); Scottish Building Federation; Scottish Executive - Housing; Scottish Executive - Planning; Scottish Rural Property and Business Association; SUST: The Lighthouse on Sustainability.
5 . This aspect of the research did not form a core initial specification but was added in after the contract was signed, thus expanding the scope of the project. However, in agreement with the Scottish Executive and Advisory Group, the reporting on this aspect has been integrated with the main research.
6. Given the number of responses, use of analysis in the findings based on percentages is generally avoided and descriptive such as 'half', 'a third' etc. are used where these are helpful.
7. The researchers used a pre-defined concept of design related to functionality, structural integrity, aesthetic appeal and costs effectiveness. The method employed in the research was a postal survey followed by semi-structured interviews. To a certain extent this was a model for the design of the current research by the Scottish Executive. The initial research is reported in Nichol & Hooper (1999).
