8. FUTURE DESIGNATIONS

We would also like to have your views on how designations under the SWD could be made in the future. In the 2005 consultation paper on new designations, it was proposed that the Scottish Government and SEPA work together to identify areas where the water quality is good and may be potentially suitable for growing shellfish. Adopting this approach would have the effect of good water quality becoming the driver of new designations, rather than designations being driven solely by shellfish production, and move towards integrated coastal zone management, providing an opportunity to separate interests geographically so that the risk of contamination is minimised. This approach would enable shellfish growers to be aware of areas with good water quality and the likelihood of such a site achieving Class A classification under the SHD, before setting up a farm.
