ANNEX 4 COMPARISON BETWEEN THE SCVS AND POLICE RECORDED CRIME STATISTICS

A4.1 It is possible to make comparisons between the SCVS and police recorded crime statistics for 6 general offence groups: vandalism, housebreaking, theft of motor vehicles, bicycle theft, assault (comprising petty and serious assault) and robbery. (See Annex Table A4.2)

A4.2 Estimates of the total number of crimes in Scotland were obtained by grossing up the SCVS crime rates based on population estimates for 2006. Police recorded Crime Statistics were published in Statistical Bulletin Criminal Justice Series CrJ/2006/6 in September 2006, 'Recorded Crime in Scotland, 2005/6'. These were then adjusted to allow comparability with the SCVS. This adjustment included excluding crimes against public and corporately owned property and crimes against victims under 16 years of age. The adjusted recorded crime figures are estimates based on 2002 survey information from Strathclyde, the largest police force area in Scotland.
