Description of project

This project was inaugurated by Kirkintilloch Baptist Church which was seeking to improve it's premises on their existing site in the centre of Kirkintilloch.

The church had expanded over a number of years to occupy a range of inter-connected buildings within the same block. These included a small stone built chapel, a 1930s domestic architectural style office, a 1960/70s prefabricated concrete hall and a number of ancilliary and inter-linking buildings.

Describe the background to the project

SMC Davis Duncan Architects were appointed with a brief based on re-cladding existing church buildings in order to accommodate its expanding range of roles and growing congregation.

Consideration of an initial application, the East Dunbartonshire Planning Service was concerned that such a high profile and growing church, located within the centre of the main town of East Dunbartonshire should take the opportunity to achieve a far more radical redevelopment to reflect both the importance of the church as an iconic presence in the town and the Council's own partnership proposals for the regeneration of the Town Centre.

What are the aims and objectives of the project?

Through discussion between the Planning Service, Architects and the client a revised brief for the project was developed.

a) Be deliverable within the resources available to the client,

b) Create an iconic building reflecting the importance of the church in the heart of Kirkintilloch Town Centre,

c) Respond to the emerging Scottish Executive emphasis on regeneration led by Design Quality

Over what timescale has the project been developed?

January 2002 - Initial project inception

December 2002 - Planning application submitted

2003/4 - Lengthy period of discussion between 3 parties to revise the terms of the project.

March 2004 - Revised planning application submitted

March 2005 - Commencement of site work

June 2007 - Project completion

Explain the process and action taken

The key elements of the redevelopment process for Kirkintilloch Baptist Church which are submitted for this award were:-

a) Identification of the potentially missed opportunity to achieve long-term regeneration rather than short-term expansion of already poorly designed set of buildings

b) Negotiation between the 3 partners to deliver a result which met the aspirations of all sides.

Explain the role of the key partners

Townhead Baptist Church - Preparedness to review the initial brief, persuade members of the value of an opportunity for comprehensive redevelopment and willingness to invest very significantly in long-term regeneration.

EDC Planning Service - Identification of the opportunity to support the regeneration of the Town Centre through the expansion of the church and the need to promote iconic building projects as a stimulus to modernising the Town Centre.

SMC Davis Duncan Architects - Willingness to understand the requirements of both parties and work creatively to deliver a high quality design within available resources.

What results were achieved?

2007 has seen the completion of a building in the heart of Kirkintilloch which has, over the last 3 years, stimulated a great deal of local debate and not a little resistence in the early stages.

The new Kirkintilloch Baptist Church complex incorporating teaching rooms, administrative facilities, a book shop and café, within the heart of the Town Centre has taken it's place as 1 of a number of renewal projects which are beginning to change the way Kirkintilloch is perceived.

In summary, why does this piece of work merit an Award?

Despite a number of buildings of architectural and historical interest, Kirkintilloch Town Centre lacks cohesiveness. The Town has been in decline and shops and businesses are struggling to attract the level of footfall required for the Centre to thrive.

The Council has been working to reverse the town's fortunes and work is well advanced on projects to deliver a new Sports Centre, Canal Basin, Arts and Culture Centre and commercial premises.

This creative partnership with a major church has resulted in a modern and iconic building and added to the momentum of change. This has only come about through the willingness of all of the parties concerned to pursue a vision which has become more than simply extending and repairing existing premises.
