Note: Centres providing pre-school education as a local authority centre or in partnership with the local authority only. Includes 85 centres that did not specify how pre-school education was provided but reported providing pre-school education in 2006. A further 17 centres reported providing pre-school education neither as an local authority centre nor in partnership with the local authority, and 59 centres did not specify how pre-school education was provided and did not report providing pre-school eduation in 2006.

Children are counted once for each centre they are registered with.

367 centres did not provide information about registrations. Where possible, figures from the 2006 census have been used for those centres (246 centres). For the remaining 121, the median numbers of registrations for each type of pre-school have been applied.

Local authority percentage estimates are calculated based on the local authority in which each centre is located. Children may cross local authority boundaries to attend pre-school education.

The percentage estimates are based on the number of children eligible for pre-school education. In 2006 the number of children eligible for deferred entry to primary school included those whose fifth birthday fell between August 2005 and February 2006 inclusive. For 2007 only those whose fifth birthdays fell between September 2006 and February 2007 inclusive are included, hence the percentage of those eligible for deferred entry is not comparable with previously published figures. See Appendix 1 for population estimates.

The number of children eligible for ante-pre-school is smaller than the number eligible for pre-school as children whose third birthday fell between January and March 2007 are included in the "under 3" category. These children are not eligible for their free ante-pre-school entitlement until the term after their third birthday.

As a result of incomplete information being returned, the possibility of double counting and children attending pre-school in neighbouring authorities, and as population figures are estimates, the above percentages are estimates and should be interpreted with caution.
