ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

We wish to acknowledge our gratitude to those organisations and individuals who took part in the background information gathering process which elicited valuable information. These include the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland, the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland, the Royal College of Psychiatrists Scottish Division, the Scottish Legal Aid Board, the State Hospital and the JLIP co-ordinators. We would also like to thank Dr. Andrew Buist for supplying information on the implications of the new legislation for GPs.

We would like to thank the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland for sending out questionnaires on our behalf and the Mental Welfare Commission and Scottish Executive for supplying contact details for staff involved in detention orders.

We would also like to express our thanks to all those who contributed to the study. In particular we are grateful to all those psychiatrists, MHOs and medical records staff who filled in the questionnaires or had consented to interviews.

We are also grateful to Dr. Christine Carswell, Dr. Prem Shah and Dr. Mark Taylor for supplying copies of research papers they had produced.

Finally we would like to acknowledge the help and support of the project manager Jamie Pitcairn from the Scottish Executive Mental Health Law Research Programme, and Fiona Tyrell from the Scottish Executive.
