'Alcopops'
'Alcopop' is a term coined to describe bottled alcoholic beverages that resemble drinks such as soft drinks and lemonade. In the drinks industry they are known as RTDs (Ready to Drink), because they are already pre-mixed, FABs (Flavoured Alcoholic Beverages) or FMBs (Flavoured Malt Beverages).
Antisocial behaviour
Section 143 of the Antisocial Behaviour etc. (Scotland) Act 2004 provides that a person engages in antisocial behaviour if they:
- act in a manner that causes or is likely to cause alarm or distress; or
- pursue a course of conduct that causes or is likely to cause alarm or distress to at least one person not of the same household as them.
It further states that, in practice, antisocial behaviour can mean different things to different people. It can cover a wide range of behaviours from litter to serious harassment, from dog fouling to criminal damage to property. Behaviour regarded as acceptable by some can be seen as antisocial and can be completely unacceptable to others. Expectations of standards of behaviour can also vary between communities and groups within communities.
Area Key Stakeholders
Those selected to take part in the study who have a professional interest and/or knowledge of a particular area surrounding the issues of alcohol. Typical area key stakeholders include: Community Police Officers, local Councillors, and night-time economy retailers.
Binge drinking
Although there is no standard definition of 'binge drinking' it is typically defined as drinking more than double the recommended daily limit on any one day. Many research studies use 8 units for men and 6 for women as proxies.
'Buckfast'
Buckfast Tonic Wine, commonly referred to as' Buckfast' is a tonic wine produced by Buckfast Abbey in Devon, south west England.
Convenience stores
Classified as small outlets offering a range of grocery items, typically serving local customers.
Dedicated off-sales
Dedicated off-sales are classified as shops whose primary function is to sell alcohol; a small range of other products may also be stocked, however, the predominant shelf space is reserved for alcohol.
Front loading
The practice of purchasing and consuming alcohol from an off-sales store prior to going for a night out.
Functional Discourse Analysis ( FDA)
A unique, rigorous and reliable technique developed by HFAL for the analysis of natural discourse (what people say) to understand motives, intentions and perceptions.
' MD 20/20'
MD 20/20 (or Mad Dog) is an American fortified wine produced by Mogen David wineries. It is popular with underage drinkers due to its high alcoholic strength and low cost.
Multi-buy
The practice of encouraging multiple purchases of a product by the use of an incentive, usually price.
Multiple grocers
Grocers are defined as an off-licence with 20% or more of its commodity turnover in groceries. Multiple Grocers have 10 or more branches, which 5 or more have licences
Multiple specialists
Multiple Specialists are off-licences with 50% or more of all commodity turnover in alcoholic drink. This must be 80% or more if the balance is groceries.
Off-Sales
Off-sales is a term used to describe a shop licensed to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises. Off-Licences can also be used. Off-sales premises can include supermarkets, grocers, convenience stores, dedicated off-sales and garages.
On-Sales
On-sales is a term used to describe venue which is licensed for consumption of alcohol at the point of sale. On-sales premises can include pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants.
Price discounting
Offering some form of price discount on a product to promote sales.
Promotions
The general term for incentives offered to consumers to encourage increased or unplanned purchasing. Promotions are the subject of Chapter 6 of the report.
Ramped discounting
The practice of offering reduced prices for higher volumes of purchasing.
Scottish Executive Urban Rural Classification
The Scottish Executive 6-fold urban rural classification uses settlement sizes and accessibility measures, based on drive time data, to classify areas of Scotland into six categories ranging from large urban to remote rural areas.
Staff
Participants of the study who work in off-sales venues.
Strategic Key Stakeholders
Those selected to take part in the study that have a profession interest and knowledge of the issues of alcohol with particular reference to off-sales. Typical strategic key stakeholders include: Industry representatives; Retail representatives; and those involved in alcohol harm reduction.
Supermarkets
Classified as large retail outlets, part of a national chain, typically facilitating large volume grocery shopping.
'Think 21'
An initiative to reduce the instances of age restricted products being sold to underage people.
Third party purchasing
The practice of persons of age buying alcohol for the consumption by those underage.
