ANNEX 5 FOCUS GROUP SCHEDULE

Section A: General ALL

1. It's an ordinary Friday night - what do you normally do?

a. When would alcohol be involved?

Ask following if not mentioned already

b. Where do you normally drink?
c. Who mostly with?
d. When do you mainly buy your alcohol?
e. Where do you buy it?
f. What do normally buy?

2. How do you feel about living in location?

a. What are the good things/bad things?

3. What are your main concerns about living in location? [health, antisocial behaviour, crime, young people, older people, female, males]

4. What do you think about how people drink alcohol in location?

5. How do people buy alcohol in your local area?

a. Do you know what the main off-sales outlets are in your community?

6. What do you believe are the main issues with regards to the way alcohol is sold through off-sales?

a. Who should take responsibility for these issues? [discuss each issue separately]

Section B: Behaviour & Health ALL

7. Are you happy with the amount of alcohol you drink? [reasons]

a. If you would like to change (or have ever changed) the amount you drink what would/did help you do this?

8. Do you believe that there are certain health problems related to alcohol?

a. Is the way alcohol is sold in your community related in some way to these problems?
b. Can you give a rough indication of the scale of those problems in your area?

9. What services/mechanisms are available to assist with reducing alcohol related problems in your area?

a. Do these adequately cover your needs?
b. If not, what else is required?

10. Thinking about location, have you seen any problematic behaviour involving alcohol sold at off-sales premises? [either supermarkets, convenience stores, dedicated off-sales]

Ask following if not mentioned already

a. What behaviour? [underage, drunkenness, theft etc.]
b. Where? Is this a usual 'hotspot'
c. Who was involved?
d. Does it differ at the different types of off-sales establishments?
e. Long term effects, e.g. health?

11. Are there particular issues associated with different types of drinks?

[Do not mention any individual drink or type of drink AT ALL - very important]

a. Different types of promotions?
b. How do you know this - what evidence do you have?

12. Do you ever buy alcohol to drink before you go out?

13. Thinking about location, what do you consider to be the mains ways of dealing with alcohol related antisocial behaviour/problem drinking? [may be criminal justice or health response]

Section C: Young People ONLY TO YOUNGER GROUP

14. Did you drink alcohol under the age of 18?

a. Are there certain type of drinks which were/are more popular?
b. When did you drink then? When during the week .. and now?
c. Where did you drink then? .. and now?

15. If not mentioned How did you get your alcohol in location? … and now?

Section D: Promotions ALL

16. When thinking about off-sales (carry-outs), what do you think promotions means? [try to avoid discussion of advertising as not relevant]

a. Are these promotions different depending on the type of shop? [supermarkets, convenience stores, dedicated off-sales]

17. Can you give examples of some promotions you have seen recently?

18. What do you think of the promotions? [encourage discussion of purchasing habits, e.g. rate, amount etc.]

19. If detail not given in above, ask - Do you think promotions affect the amount and rate of alcohol you drink? [explain ' rate'.]
