3. Reported numbers of Accidents ( Table 1)

3.1 Table 1 shows the numbers of injury road accidents recorded by the police. Following the trend of most years since 1989, the reported total fell. In 2006, there was a provisional total of 12,961 accidents in which someone was killed or injured, 3% fewer than in 2005. However, the number of fatal accidents in 2006 (293) was 29 (11%) higher than in 2005, but this was still the fifth lowest number since records of fatal accidents began in 1970. The provisional number of serious injury accidents recorded in 2006 (2,224) fell by 24 (1%) from the figure for 2005 to the lowest number ever recorded. There was a provisional total of 10,444 "slight injury" accidents reported in 2006, 4% fewer than the figure for 2005 and the lowest number since the current records began in 1970.
