Table VA2a: Voluntary Assistance - Throughcare Addiction Service - Cases Commenced
Table VA2a should give details of the total number of Throughcare Addiction Service Cases which commenced in the period 1st August 2005 to 31st March 2006, as delineated below.
Since this table concerns a subset of Voluntary Assistance cases (those who received the Throughcare Addiction Service) the total number of cases commenced should be less than the total number of cases in VA1.
Throughcare Addiction Service Guidance
The new Throughcare Addiction Service (TAS) commenced on 1 August 2005 and forms part of the voluntary aftercare service, which is often referred to as "Phase 2" of the enhanced throughcare strategy. TAS is delivered by local authority criminal justice social work - or by one of their contracted service providers - who will work with the offender in the 6 week period prior to release from custody through the 6 week period post-release. The Throughcare Addiction Service worker will offer a more intensive motivational service and attempt to help the offender address their addiction (and associated) difficulties and link them into appropriate services. TAS is not normally available to those prisoners who are serving sentences of less than 31 days unless they are within the following two priority groups: female offenders and young male offenders.
Further Clarification
The phrase "case commenced" means that the TAS provider has accepted the TAS referral from the SPS Enhanced Addiction Service Provider.
Q1 asks for the total number of Throughcare Addiction Service cases commenced relating to males and females. The next three questions then ask for particular information on sub groups within the overall total. This will help gather information on specific priority sub groups.
Q2 asks for the number of Throughcare Addiction Service cases commenced relating to female prisoners serving sentences of less than 31 days. Sentence length is the important defining factor here and not age.
Q3 relates specifically to Throughcare Addiction Service cases for young male offenders (aged under 21 years) serving sentences of less than 31 days. Sentence length and age are the important defining factors here.
Q4 relates specifically to the number of Throughcare Addiction Service cases relating to adult males (aged 21 years and over) who received a Throughcare Addiction Service.

Table VA2b: Voluntary Assistance - Throughcare Addiction Service - Individuals
Table VA2b should give details of the total number of individuals who were offered or who received the Throughcare Addiction Service, as delineated below, in the period 1st August 2005 to 31st March 2006.
Further Clarification
Q1 and Q2 are linked. Q1 seeks to establish the total number of individuals who were offered a service by the TAS provider. This figure may be different from that in Q2 which seeks to establish how many individuals actually received a service. The phrase "offered a Throughcare Addiction Service" means that the TAS provider has accepted the referral from the Enhanced Addiction Service Provider within the prison and has written to the client to formally offer them a service. The phrase "received a Throughcare Addiction Service" means that the client had at least one face-to-face contact with the TAS provider either pre- or post release. This should assist us in identifying take-up levels.
Q1 and Q2 ask for the total number of male and female clients who were offered/who received a Throughcare Addiction Service. The next three questions then ask for particular information on sub groups within the overall total. This will help gather information on specific priority sub groups.
Q3 asks for the number of female prisoners serving sentences of less than 31 days who received a Throughcare Addiction Service. Sentence length is the important defining factor here and not age.
Q4 relates specifically to young male offenders (aged under 21 years) serving sentences of less than 31 days who received a Throughcare Addiction Service. Sentence length and age are the important defining factors here
Q5 relates specifically to those adult males (aged 21 years and over) who received a Throughcare Addiction Service
