SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
2. Choosing Our Future: Scotland's Sustainable Development Strategy 1 sets out the national and international context that drives the Scottish Executive's sustainable development agenda. The Strategy highlights, as key priorities, the need to protect and manage our natural resources for the long term; the need to protect the historic environment; the need to change the way Scotland generates and uses energy with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and maximising our considerable renewable energy potential. The Planning etc (Scotland) Act 2006 2 introduces a new duty that requires that functions relating to the preparation of the National Planning Framework and development planning should be exercisable with the objective of contributing to sustainable development.
