A1 Analysis of focus group participants
In total 72 delegates attended 13 focus groups across Scotland. This included a focus group conducted via video conferencing with organisations in Orkney. In addition telephone interviews were carried out in areas where arranging a meeting was not possible.
Delegates were asked to specify a maximum of 3 main aims of their organisation. The table below shows the percentage frequency for each aim. The aims selected most often were:
- The advancement of citizenship or community development
- The relief of those in need by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage
- The advancement of health
Aims that were not chosen by any of the delegates were:
- The advancement of animal welfare
- The advancement of environmental protection
- The saving of lives

Delegates were asked to state their main beneficiaries. The table below shows the percentage breakdown of each age group.
Most of the delegates stated that their organisations were either involved in working with

- No specific group, or for the benefit of the community
- Other charities/voluntary bodies
- People with disabilities or health project.
Organisations that were not specified were Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender ( LGBT) and Natural environment.

Organisation turnover
Delegates were asked to give an idea of their organisation's turnover for the last financial year. Focus group delegates covered all sizes of organisation.

A number of intermediaries were contacted to assist us to include organisations with a turnover of less than £25,000 as it was felt these organisations had particular barriers and may not have found it easy to participate in the review methodology. The following groups were interviewed by telephone or by small focus group:
