13. Diversion from Prosecution (Chart 34 and Tables 82 to 86)
13.1 A total of 1,198 Diversion from Prosecution ( DP) cases commenced in 2005-06, an increase of 13 per cent from the 2004-05 total of 1,064. These 1,198 cases relate to 1,135 individuals. Other DP totals for 2005-06 included 1,601 referrals (a 5 per cent increase on 2004-05), 1,490 assessments (8 per cent increase), 768 cases successfully completed (1 per cent increase) and 54 (64 per cent decrease) cases referred to drug treatment/education.
13.2 Fifty-five per cent of DP cases commenced in 2005-06 involved males. Females receiving Diversion from Prosecution tended to be older than males, with 48 per cent aged over 30 compared with 39 per cent for males. Conversely, 47 per cent of cases for males and 24 per cent for females involved persons aged under 21 years.
13.3 Forty-eight per cent of DP cases commenced in 2005-06 related to offenders who were unemployed or not seeking employment. Males were more likely to be employed than females, 20 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.
