SEGEN 7

Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981

Licence for Veterinary Surgeons and Practitioners to Keep Certain Birds

Purpose

The purpose of this proposed licence is to allow Veterinary surgeons and Veterinary practitioners to keep specimens of certain species of birds for the purposes of treatment. These are birds listed on Schedule 4 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, notwithstanding the provisions of Section 7 of that Act and the Wildlife and Countryside (Registration and Ringing of Certain Captive Birds) Regulations 1982 - SI 1981 No.1221, as amended by SI 1991 No.478 and SI 1994 No.1152. A legal condition will be inserted to ensure that this licence may not be used unless there is no other satisfactory solution.

Draft Conditions

1. This licence only applies to qualified Veterinary practitioners and Veterinary surgeons in the course of their duties and in accordance with this licence for treating Schedule 4 birds.

2. A bird receiving treatment may be kept under the terms of this licence for a period not exceeding 6 weeks.

3. The Veterinary practitioner or Veterinary surgeon shall keep a record of each bird kept.

4. Any bird kept under the provisions of this licence may be kept only for the purpose of receiving professional veterinary treatment.

5. If a veterinary practitioner suspects that a bird has been incapacitated through illegal activity this must be reported to the police.

Note

This licence allows authorised persons to keep specimens of species listed on Schedule 4 which are receiving professional treatment, for a period not exceeding six weeks, without the requirement to register the bird.
