Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981

Licence to Take Birds Eggs for the Purpose of Removing Unsuccessful Eggs from Nest Boxes

This licence, granted under Section 16(1)(c) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 by Scottish Ministers after consultation with Scottish Natural Heritage, and being satisfied that there is no other satisfactory solution, hereby authorises, subject to certain terms and conditions:-

  • the taking and destroying of the eggs of wild birds, or any part of such an egg, for the sole purpose of allowing the removal and prompt destruction of abandoned and unsuccessful eggs from nest boxes before the commencement of the next breeding season.

Conditions

1. This licence only applies to the taking by hand and destroying of eggs of wild birds, or any part of such eggs, from nest boxes in Scotland not currently in use by birds, during the period 1 August to 31 January, and is issued solely in order to permit the removal of abandoned or unsuccessful eggs from nest boxes before the next breeding season.

2. No unauthorized person shall remove eggs from another persons nest box.

3. Eggs removed from nest boxes shall either be destroyed or sent to an authorized authority (e.g. Royal Museum of Scotland).

4. Nothing in this licence permits the retention or possession of any egg of a wild bird or any part of such an egg.

5. Nothing in this licence permits the sale, hire, barter or exchange of any egg of a wild bird or any part of such an egg.
