Previous to 2005 'unknowns' were allocated to a category rather than being reported as unknown.

Numbers of looked after children aged 18+ were not asked for prior to 2006.

Table records episodes of care which have begun. A child may start to be looked after more than once in a year and so may be counted more than once here.

Changes between 2003-04 and 2004-05 are partly due to improved recording.

Rates per population based on GRO(Scotland) June 2005 population estimates. 18-21 calculated as a percentage of 18 year olds.

East Renfrewshire and Scottish Borders did not provide information in time for inclusion. North Lanarkshire did not provide information on children starting to be looked after in time for inclusion. 2004-05 figures for these authorities have been incorporated into 2005-06 figures in this table and do not include young people aged 18-21.
