Introduction

The Scottish Executive is committed to eradicating prejudice and bigotry. As part of this aim we are working with faith groups, sports clubs, and other relevant groups to tackle sectarianism in Scotland. One strand of this work concerns education, and we have already completed several actions:

  • produced an anti-sectarianism education resource, Don't Give It Don't Take It, accessible on-line at www.ltscotland.org.uk/antisectarian
  • provided £154,000 funding over three years from 2006 to Nil by Mouth to take forward activities including running anti-sectarianism workshops in schools
  • established a fund of £100,000 to fund anti-sectarianism work in schools
  • run a national seminar demonstrating good practice in twinning between denominational and non-denominational schools
  • worked with others to introduce a One Scotland - Anti-Sectarianism Award as part of the Scottish Education Awards. This award is about eradicating religious divides in communities, and highlights the crucial role that schools can play in tackling sectarianism and promoting understanding and tolerance.

HMIE has also highlighted good practice in a number of inspection and review reports.

Building on the success of the twinning seminar, this guide provides ideas, suggestions and good practice examples in relation to twinning between denominational and non-denominational schools. The seminar highlighted that there is no single blueprint for how twinning work should be undertaken: local authorities and headteachers will need to think about what approaches are appropriate in their schools and communities.
