4. Next Steps

4.1 The next steps in this exercise to strengthen and streamline the enforcement of environmental law in Scotland include-

1. We are inviting comments on this discussion paper by 22 February 2007 and later in 2007, the Scottish Executive will publish a consultation report.
2. In conjunction with driving forward the detailed development of policy on the strengthening of environmental law we will:-

• conduct comprehensive regulatory impact assessments to measure the cost to operators of any proposed regulatory duties;

and

• consider in more detail how compliance assistance can best be provided to operators and how operator duties may be streamlined and simplified (without compromising environmental protection or compliance with environmental law).
