ANNEX 3 ROUTE COMBINATIONS
Route Group 1
Route 1 Sleeper Services
These are unique services in terms of train and passenger, so ideally should not be combined with other services in the analysis.
Route Group 2
Route 2 Edinburgh, Falkirk High - Glasgow Queen Street
This is First ScotRail's Flagship Route. It is used by large numbers of commuters in both directions, plus business users. It experiences high demand throughout most of the day as it is the fastest service between Edinburgh and Glasgow, and has a service frequency of 15 minutes. All stations on this route are manned.
Route Group 3
Route 3 Glasgow Queen Street - Aberdeen
Route 4 Edinburgh - Aberdeen
Route 5 Glasgow Queen Street/Edinburgh - Inverness and Edinburgh - Perth
These are cross country services with mixed patronage of business and leisure passengers. Those working off shore on the oil rigs use the Glasgow- Aberdeen service for commuting as there are limited stops, and most stations on route are manned. The Edinburgh - Aberdeen service is similar, but stops much more frequently as it serves stations in Fife not served by the more frequent commuter services. There are fewer commuters on this route due to the frequency of stops and other operators run faster services. A number of the more rural stations on these routes may only be manned for a short period of time each day.
Route Group 4
Route 6 Aberdeen - Inverness
This cross country service is a rural rail line serving smaller stations, some of which are unmanned. Commuters use at either end, in peak times, to access Aberdeen and Inverness (particularly those using the Park and Ride in Aberdeen).
Route Group 5
Route 7 Edinburgh - North Berwick
Route 8 Edinburgh - Bathgate
Most of the stations on these routes are unmanned. These are very much busy commuter routes in peak hours, due to significant housing development in the local area (Bathgate) and congestion on local roads.
Route Group 6
Route 9 Edinburgh - Shotts - Glasgow Central
This is currently the "slow" route to Glasgow (Central Station), as it serves all stops en-route. The route contains a mix of manned and unmanned stations. The service frequency is low, and GNER run a service on the same route, so it is not very heavily used.
Route Group 7
Route 10 Edinburgh - Falkirk Grahamston - Dunblane and Perth and Glasgow Queen Street - Stirling - Dunblane
These are primarily commuter routes linking Dunblane/Stirling with Edinburgh and Glasgow. This is a frequent service and partly duplicates the Glasgow - Edinburgh service.
Route Group 8
Route 11 Fife Circle
This service experiences high commuter demand into Edinburgh, serving Edinburgh's commuter belt in Dunfermline and Fife, and contains mostly manned stations.
Route Group 9
Route 12 Edinburgh - Newcraighall
This is a local service used heavily by commuters. Newcraighall is an unmanned station, and contains a large free Park and Ride car park.
Route Group 10
Route 13 Newcastle, Carlisle, Glasgow - Ayr, Girvan, Stranraer and Glasgow - Dunfries, Carlisle, Newcastle
Route 14 Glasgow Queen Street - Oban, Fort William and Mallaig
Route 21 Glasgow Queen Street - Cumbernauld - Falkirk Grahamston, Glasgow Queen Street - Maryhill and Garelochhead, and Motherwell - Cumbernauld
These are cross country services with mix of manned and unmanned stations. They are used by commuters near Glasgow, but are mainly used by long distance leisure (occasional business) travellers. Route 13 serves the ferry from Stranraer to Belfast. Tourists probably significantly increase patronage on both routes in the summer (route 14 serves popular walking areas).
Route Group 11
Route 15 Inverness - Thurso/Wick and Kyle of Lochalsh
This is a rural, local service containing many unmanned stations. Some users are commuting into Inverness, and patronage increases in the summer due to tourism.
Route Group 12
Route 16 Glasgow - Balloch, Helensburgh Central and Milngavie and Glasgow Queen Street Low Level - Springburn and Drumgelloch
Route 17 Glasgow - Motherwell, Coatbridge, Lanark and Carstairs
Local urban commuter routes, with mostly manned stations.
Route Group 13
Route 18 Glasgow - Ayr, Ardrossan, Largs
This is a cross country route with a mix of manned and unmanned stations. It is worth noting that this service serves Prestwick Airport, and 20% of Prestwick Airport Air passengers get there by train.
Route Group 14
Route 19 Glasgow Central - Gourock/Wemyss Bay
Route 20 Glasgow Central - Cathcart Circle, Neilston and Newton
Local urban commuter routes, with mostly manned stations.
Route Group 15
Route 22 Glasgow Central - Paisley Canal
Route 23 Glasgow Central - Whifflet
Route 24 Glasgow Central - East Kilbride and Glasgow Central - Barrhead and Kilmarnock - Ayr, Girvan, New Cumnock
Commuter routes, with mostly manned stations.
