CHAPTER THREE RESPONDENT PROFILE AND JOURNEY DETAILS
3.1 Introduction
In this chapter we describe:
- The type of route respondents were travelling on
- The class of the station at which they boarded
- The class of the train they were travelling in at the time of interview
- Respondents journey purpose and their demographic profile
3.2 Type of Route
To allow meaningful analysis, the lines of route have been grouped into 15 categories. These groups take into account the characteristics of the routes to be surveyed, in terms of passenger type and journey purpose, length and type of route, and types of stations on the route. Details of these groupings can be found in ANNEX 3. The number of passengers interviewed on the sleeper service and on route group 11 is low owing to a lack of passengers on these routes.

3.3 Station Class
A list of the stations passengers had boarded the train they were interviewed on can be found in ANNEX 4. Stations have been grouped by their class. There are some stations namely Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central, Dunbar, Prestwick International, Carlisle and Newcastle which are excluded from SQUIRE. For analysis purposes it has been decided to include Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central and Prestwick International and exclude Carlisle, Dunbar and Newcastle. The majority of respondents had boarded at a class 1 station (63%). Very few boarded at a class 6 station and this reflects the fact there are very few class 6 stations.
