ANNEX E: PROFESSIONS INVOLVED IN HEALTH PROTECTION

NHS | Chief Executive | ( CE) | The senior manager ultimately responsible in an NHS Board area for all the functions of the NHS. The CE reports to a Health Board appointed by Scottish Ministers using the public appointments process |
| Director of Public Health | ( DPH) | A senior manger and medical specialist in public health who leads the Public Health Department and reports to the Chief Executive. The DPH is generally responsible for strategies and actions to protect and improve the health of the local population. They act as DMO to the local authority |
| Consultant in Public Health Medicine | CPHM Communicable Disease and Environmental Health ( CD/ EH) | A medically qualified doctor with specialist training in communicable disease and environmental health. They also often act as DMO to the LA (as do other Consultants in Public Health Medicine) and may lead the health protection team within the NHS Board Department of Public Health |
Local Authority | Chief Executive | ( CE) | The senior manager ultimately responsible in a local authority area for all the functions of the Local Authority |
| Chief Environmental Health Officer | ( CEHO) | A qualified Environmental Health Officer and head of service or senior manager responsible for leading the Council's environmental health service. The CEHO advises the Chief Executive and Councillors on environmental health issues |
| Environmental Health Officer | ( EHO) | A professionally qualified officer working to advise upon and enforce environmental health legislation. Areas of expertise include food safety, occupational health and safety, and environmental control and monitoring in relation to public health and safety. EHOs work closely with NHS Board health protection staff in the investigation of public health incidents |
