Description of project
We had a piece of land in the middle of our village which could only be described as an eye sore. As one of the only villages to be without a memorial to honour our fallen heroes of two world wars we decided to start and apply for funding to build one for military and miners as we are a mining village. |
Context - describe the background to the project
The land was approximately 75 yards by 25 yards and we decided to third the area. One third for a memorial cairn, one third for a memorial garden and the other piece for a children's play ground to which parents could watch the children play. This play ground was named by the children of both schools. The project has given us a focal point to our village. |
What are the aims and objectives of the project?
To give a meeting place for the people of the village and to remember the villagers who lost their lives in the two world conflicts, also to pay tribute to the miners who died in their line of duties while working underground. |
Timescale - over what timescale has the project been developed?
When we heard we could apply for funding from the Millennium we started our project in June 1999. We managed to get the cairn built and consecrated in 19 th January 2002. We pursued West Lothian Council to build the new play park (as previous one had been vandalised at back of housing scheme) in second part of area. We then started applying for funding for memorial garden which was consecrated 7 th May 2005 whole project too from June 1999 till 7 th May 2005 |
Action - explain the process and action taken
We applied to Millennium funding to which we were successful this was to train the local youth and teach them skills in stone masonry. We applied to North British Distillers. This money was for materials to build the cairn. We applied to Levenseat Trust this funding was for bronze plaques and also for mono blocking around the cairn. We applied to have a firm to take out old trees and level ground to start building cairn. |
Explain the role of the key partners
Our mentor was Bill Mooney NHS Trust St John's Hospital Livingston, Bill had control of all operations the stone mason was Chris Rajec who gave the local lads lessons in stone masonry while also carving the stone in a local quarry Andy McIlvride was the cairn designer with his partner Francis who designed the plaques. |
Results - what results were achieved?
We now have a distinguished focal point in our village that is a credit to all who have worked to achieve what has completely transformed the whole village. |
Conclusion - in summary, why does this piece of work merit an Award?
The project has drawn the attention to all the officials of West Lothian Council including our local MSP's and the late Robin Cook who mentioned our achievements in his book. It is also heart warming to watch the children enjoy the play park. It is also known for brides to have their wedding photos taken at the memorial garden. |
