FOREWORD BY THE CHIEF SCIENTIFIC ADVISER FOR SCOTLAND
I very much share the vision of Scotland as a "science nation".
Achieving this vision will need sustained action on the many interlinked issues that affect our growth as a science nation.
There is no doubt that the science community is working in a much more integrated way than 5 years ago, and we are seeing the benefits of that. But in other ways, Scotland still lags its main competitors, and there is still much scope to improve the connectedness between the various parts of the system.
Fundamentally, we need to see public understanding and appreciation of science as an important cultural goal, on a par with literacy and numeracy. We need to give a better emphasis to the role of science in raising our quality of life, and its contribution to all areas of devolved policy - including health, transport, justice, education, culture, communities and the environment. We need to ensure that science and innovation are developed responsibly and sustainably.
Your response to this consultation will help us to do this. May I thank you in advance for your contribution.
Professor Anne Glover
