FOREWORD BY THE MINISTER FOR SCIENCE

Science and innovation are the cornerstones of Scotland's future. They are fundamentally important if we are to grow our economy and raise our quality of life. Scotland's challenge is to become a "science nation". We need to make certain that all parts of education, the economy and Government are working together, with the same passion and commitment to science and innovation. The recent appointment in the Scottish Executive of our new Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, Professor Anne Glover, is an exciting development that will ensure these issues are taken forward in a more urgent and more integrated way.

Scotland's new science strategy is key to our success. We need to keep pace with the future, building on the previous strategy. There have been many exciting developments both in Scotland and around the globe since it was published in 2001. In particular we need to raise the profile and importance of science, particularly with young people across Scotland.

Your contributions to developing the strategy will be crucial. Now is the time to get involved and help to make a difference.

Thanks for your help - there could not be a more important issue for our country's future.
