Supply chain establishment

Designed to develop supply chain required to harvest, store, process and supply biomass; over £400,000 allocated so far; applies to both energy crops and wood fuel. Provides training, business establishment costs and plant capital costs. £200k limit per project.

Currently closed. An extra funding round in England was announced as part of the UK Climate Change Program in March.

Bioenergy Capital Grants Scheme

DTI/ Big Lottery Fund

Heat/ CHP/electricity projects over a range of scale.

Provides funding towards capital costs of heat, CHP and electricity plant ( e.g. Lockerbie); First round made available £66 million.

New round of application opened recently specifically for small-scale biomass heat and CHP (£ 2 million total of funds not allocated under first round of scheme).

Scottish Community and Householders Renewables Initiative ( SCHRI)

Energy Saving Trust; Highlands and Islands Enterprise (funded by the Scottish Executive).

Community/ domestic scale renewable energy projects

Grant of 30% for capital costs and up to £4000 available to householders and up to £100,000 and 100% of costs for community groups, local authorities and schools.

Ongoing.

An independent review of the SCHRI has been completed recently and is informing the Scottish Executive's thinking on the scheme's future shape and funding.

Scottish Forestry Grants Scheme

Funds expansion of forestry and woodland; SRC Establishment grant of £1000 ha -1; also includes development of farm woodland for energy

Landfill Tax Credit Scheme

Pollution reduction and land reclamation

Encourages landfill operators to mitigate effects of landfill on local communities by providing them with a 90% tax credit against donations made to environmental bodies. Energy crops can meet the objectives of reclaiming land or reducing pollution on land.

Transport, heat and electricity uses quality

Promotes energy efficiency ( SAVE projects) and the increased use of renewable energy resources ( ALTENER). Includes a component for sustainable energy in transport ( STEER).

Enhanced Capital Allowances Scheme

Business investment in emission reduction technologies

Biomass Heat Acceleration Project

Carbon Trust

Reduce costs and address supply chain risks in the biomass energy market.

The project aims to work with existing and new sites to develop benchmarks from robust case studies, identify and demonstrate cost reductions, and raise awareness amongst end users and other stakeholders.

Launched April 2006.
